About blood, wondering

I woke up this morning thinking
about blood, wondering
what’s between my skin and bones.

The cat’s weight collected
on one little paw shifted
the skin around my breastbone.

It moved,
slid,
glided. I wondered,
what is there between them?

I wonder where
all the water in our bodies lives.
I think about the lungs
moving oxygen,
white blood cells incorporating it
into our blood, hemoglobin
turning it red.

Where does it all go?
How do our organs work?
What is happening beneath the surface?
